BELMAR, NJ – The Belmar Public Library is hosting a three-presentation series with lawyer Tina James about what families with special needs children can do to plan for the present and the future.

The first presentation is on Wednesday night at the Belmar Public Library on 517 10th Avenue at 6 p.m. It will be an introductory presentation on how to plan for your child with disabilities.

The other presentations are scheduled for Nov. 3 and Dec. 1 and will cover estate planning and helping your special needs child transition into adulthood, including guardianship.

“A lot of times, when a child turns 18 or 21, they are going to need guardianship, so we need to think about other ways to help them transition into adulthood,” James said to Patch.

James, who has been doing presentations like this for three years now, says that she does these presentations to give families advice as she has spent her career litigating cases involving special needs children and their families and has seen the effect of poor planning has on both the child and the parents.

“When you have a younger child not reaching their milestones, you may need to figure out early intervention,” James said to Patch.

“The driving point (of these presentations) is to make sure families are educated and making sure they and their child’s rights are protected.”
