WALL, NJ — A group of local Girl Scouts is marking miles for fun and safety in Wall Township with their new bike path safety initiative.

To improve safety around town, Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore Cadette Troop 61454 painted ¼ mile markers from the start of the Edgar Felix Bikeway in Manasquan all the way to Allaire State Park and the Route 18 Bike Path around the Wall Municipal Complex.

By painting these mile markers, the troop said they hope to improve safety so that whenever someone needs to share their location, they’ll never be more than ¼ of a mile from any marker.

“[We] liked the idea of improving our local bike path because it provides our friends and neighbors the ability to be a part of a larger community and experience more of what our state has to offer,” the troop said.

While the troop’s project improves local safety, there is also a statewide link, as the Edgar Felix Bikeway and Route 18 Bike Path are part of a larger project to create a route from New Jersey’s capital, Trenton, to the Jersey Shore (called The Capital to Coast Trail).

Currently, the trail is a work-in-progress, troop members said, with some sections complete and other sections still in development.

By completing their bike safety project, participants received a Silver Award, which is the highest award a cadette can achieve. Earning the award involves identifying a community need, leading a project to address it, and creating lasting, positive change.

On Wednesday, the troop participants were presented with their Silver Awards at a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony held at the entrance to the Edgar Felix Bikeway in Manasquan.

Wall Township Committee Members Erin Managan and Timothy Farrell attended the event, and Troop 61454 Silver Award participants worked in conjunction with the Wall Township Police Department and Wall Department of Public Works to complete the project.

Project supplies were also donated by local businesses such as Ricciardi Brothers, Sherwin-Williams, Traffic Lines Inc. and Lowes.
