WALL, NJ — As the summer season approaches, Wall Township Police are warning drivers about the dangers and consequences of driving while intoxicated (DWI) following a recent series of accidents that have been linked to impaired driving.

On Saturday, May 31, police said a three-vehicle accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 34 and Allaire Road.

The crash occurred after one of the drivers (who was later charged with DWI) rear-ended another vehicle, police said. The accident led to two people being brought to the hospital.

The following day, police arrested and charged another person with DWI around 12:40 a.m. on Ramshorn Drive. The driver was arrested after losing control of their vehicle and hitting trees, police said.

Shortly after the accident on Ramshorn Drive, a third driver was arrested and charged with DWI around 1:30 a.m. on June 1 after crashing and rolling his vehicle on Belmar Blvd. at Megill Road, police said. The driver sustained serious injuries and was brought to the hospital.

These incidents, and others like them, serve as reminders of the potential for tragedy when people choose to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or drugs, police said.

The consequences of driving while intoxicated can lead to serious injuries, fatalities, and significant legal repercussions for those involved. Wall Township Police are urging drivers to avoid impaired driving and call the police or Wall Township Emergency Services if needed.

“Driving while intoxicated significantly impairs judgment, reaction time, and motor skills, making it impossible to operate a vehicle safely,” Police Chief Sean O’Halloran said. “It puts not only the driver at risk but also endangers passengers, pedestrians, and other motorists on the road.”

Going forward, Wall Township Police are emphasizing the following reminders to drivers:

  • DWI is a serious offense with significant legal consequences. These can include hefty fines, loss of driving privileges, mandatory alcohol education programs, installation of ignition interlock devices, and even jail time
  • There are always alternatives to driving under the influence. These include designating a sober driver, calling a taxi or ride-sharing service, or utilizing public transportation
  • Even a small amount of alcohol can impair driving ability. It is never worth the risk to yourself or others.
  • Wall Township Police is committed to vigorously enforcing DWI laws to ensure the safety of our community. Officers will be vigilant in their efforts to identify and apprehend impaired drivers.

“We urge all residents and visitors to make responsible choices and never drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” police said. “Please plan ahead and make arrangements for a safe ride home before you consume any substances that could impair your ability to drive.”
