Police thanked the caller for reporting the attempt, and said a relationship with residents is the first step in reducing or stopping thefts.

But police also reminded residents to never confront a suspect themselves. Just report the matter to police.

As part of that effort, the Police Department will hold another public forum Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. in the Wall Municipal Court Room, 2700 Allaire Road, to discuss crimefighting in the township.

"This event is an open forum, we want to hear from you!" the department said.

The discussion will center around crime trends, car thefts and other issues, similar to past forums.
