Fifth graders at Angelo L. Tomaso took their classmates on a round-the-world journey as they researched and dressed as famous explorers who circumnavigated the globe centuries ago.
There was Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer who organized a Spanish expedition to the East Indies and proved that the world was round.

“Ferdinand discovered the Pacific Ocean and what is now known as the Strait of Magellan,” said Aneira Kalahasti, as she and William Morreale presented to the class on Sept. 30.
And the English sea explorer Henry Hudson who,while unsuccessful in his attempts to find a shorter route to Asia through the Arctic Circle, did come upon much of Canada and what is now New York City during his travels.

“He was planning to find land and he found lots of it,” Alexander Geppert pointed out with his fellow explorer, Julian Joglekar.
There were other explorers represented as well. Christopher Columbus. Vasco da Gama. Marco Polo. The social studies project, directed by teacher Mary Lynch, was both high and low tech. Students were required to create a Google Slides presentation along with a handmade map of the explorer’s route.
