Warren Voters Support Lonegan, With Nearly 25% Voter Turnout
Democrat Booker captures about a third of support for U.S. Senate job in Republican-dominated community.

It may have been a special election, held on an atypical Wednesday in October, but close to a quarter of Warren voters—24.63 percent—turned out at the polls to vote for a new New Jersey representative in the U.S. Senate to fulfill the final 15 months of Frank Lautenberg, the longtime Democrat U.S. Senator who died in office.
A majority of Warren voters who cast a ballot, 1,920 of them, supported Republican Steve Lonegan in a town where Republicans have local control. However, Democrat Cory Booker also attracted 1.070 votes on Wednesday, according to the Warren Township clerk's office.
Single-digit numbers of votes also were cast for most of the other candidates listed on the ballot through petition. Edward C. Stackhouse, Jr. received eight votes; Pablo Olivera, 1; Eugene Martin LaVergne, 0; Robert DePasquale, 5; Antonio Nico Sabas, 1; and Stuart David Meissner, 4, according to the township clerk's office.
Polls were open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Patch will continue to report on final results.
Lautenberg died in June at age 89. His unexpired term continues through the end of 2014.
