Tons of Boulders Crush Watchung Public Works Vehicle

Watchung Department of Public Works employees had a surprise waiting for them after the long Thanksgiving weekend. They came back to work to find that a borough dump truck had been crushed under the weight of a dozen boulders.

The weight of the rock load that pummeled the truck "was in the tons," Borough Administrator Tom Atkins told NJ.com in their report. From the photos, the bed of the truck bore the brunt of the crash. Atkins said the vehicle was totaled.

The truck was behind the Watchung Police Department, near a steep rock face, the NJ.com article said. Borough engineers investigated the wall and said they found no signs of any other imminent rock falls from unstable areas.
