Civilian, 24, Killed In Police-Involved Shooting In Passaic: AG

The Attorney General's Shooting Response Task Force is looking into the shooting.

A 24-year-old man was the person killed in a police-involved shooting that occurred early Friday morning in Passaic, the New Jersey Attorney General's Office announced.

Authorities did not release the man's name. No other injuries were reported, said Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal.

According to a preliminary investigation, at about 11:45 p.m., Passaic police received multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired near Myrtle Avenue and Harrison Street, Grewal said.

Police found three men at the intersection and two of them had handguns, authorities said.

Police confronted the men and one officer "fired his service weapon" and fatally wounded the victim, Grewal said.

Another officer fired in the direction of the second armed man, Grewal said. That man, who was not shot, left the scene on foot.

Police found a handgun at the scene. The man was taken St. Mary's General Hospital in Passaic, where he was pronounced dead, Grewal said.

The Attorney General's Office Shooting Response Task Force is investigating the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing, the Attorney General's Office said, and no further information would be released.

The investigation is being done following a recently-approved law that requires the Attorney General's Office to investigate a person's death that occurs when they encounter a law enforcement officer or while they are in law enforcement custody.
