10th Annual Born To Run 5K Set For Sunday In Wayne

WAYNE, NJ – The 10th annual “Born to Run 5k” will be held Sept. 8 at Packanack Lake in Wayne.

The run, which typically draws hundreds of participants, is in memory of Bruce Eckrote, a township resident who passed away in 2009 from esophageal cancer.

Each year, the event raises money for an individual who is battling cancer, as well as for scholarships to students from Wayne Hills and Wayne Valley high schools. Funding is also contributed to cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and oncology patient care at Hackensack University Medical Center.

Proceeds from this year’s run will benefit Henry Aulenbach, a 7-year-old who was recently diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, a rare brain cancer. Henry, the son of Anthony Wayne Middle School Principal Dave Aulenbach is currently undergoing chemotherapy after having surgery to remove the tumor.

Over the last decade, more than $130,000 has been raised, according to the Bruce Eckrote Memorial Fund. Among the causes supported: Steven Domalewski's ongoing recovery, Friends of Carol Mango, Hurricane Irene flood relief, high school scholarships for local students and cancer research.

On Race Day (Sept. 8), registration and check-in begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by a 9 a.m. start time. Awards will follow at 10:30 a.m.
