The string of drownings comes just a few days after another five-year-old boy drowned in a pool in Paterson.

The recent drownings in a tight span is reminiscent of the summer of 2022, where 10 swimmers died in the span of a month. The common thread those drownings were that of the 10 deaths, eight happened when people were swimming at unguarded beaches.

This was also the case last summer when 31-year-old Marco Lemus-Giron was pronounced dead on the shore after getting pulled from Sunset Lake in Bridgeton. His death marked the second reported drowning in a South Jersey lake that weekend.

Drowning tragedy also marked Nilda Sanchez, whose her 2-year-old daughter Alani Sophia Holmes drowned in her babysitter's pool.

Drowning is the second leading cause of death for children ages five to 14, following motor vehicle accidents, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is the leading cause of death for children ages one to four.
