WEST MILFORD, NJ — Clinton Road already has a reputation for being pretty spooky, with reports of drivers seeing phantom headlights, and rumors that a "Ghost Boy" haunts a bridge near Dead Man's Curve.

Now, a new study by car rental company Sixt has placed this winding West Milford road at the top of its "Most Haunted Roads" list, naming it the spookiest stretch in the United States.

Clinton Road also came in as the second-most haunted road in the entire world in the Sixt study, behind a major regional route in South Africa.

There are numerous tales of paranormal activity said to occur on this 10-mile stretch of road, which is in the mountainous northern part of the county. It was even the subject of a 2019 movie, starring rapper and actor Ice-T.

One of the most popular tales involves the ghost of a young boy, who is said to hang out under a bridge and throw coins back up to people who toss them into the creek — then chase them back to their cars.

The founders of the "Weird NJ" website and publication took a trip up this winding, rural route earlier this year, and said they saw plenty of coins in the water near Dead Man's Curve.

"As we peered over the guardrail and down into the tea colored water of the stream we could clearly see dozens of coins resting on the bottom among the stones of the creekbed," they wrote. "There is no way of knowing how many appearances the Ghost Boy made when summoned by the coin tossers."

Other folks have said they seen headlights appear out of nowhere along the isolated stretch of road and follow their vehicles before disappearing, as the RV Trader blog noted.

If you dare to take a drive, find Clinton Road where it begins at Route 23, and drive it all the way north to its terminus at Upper Greenwood Lake (or vice-versa).

The Sixt report pinned Interstate 4 in Florida as the second-most haunted road in the United States, and Bray Road in Wisconsin came in third. Check out their spine-tingling study here.
