Coronavirus Takes The Life Of Passaic County Firefighter, 33

The Passaic firefighter who died of the new coronavirus leaves behind a wife and two children.

PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — A 33-year-old Passaic County firefighter died early Tuesday morning from complications of the new coronavirus.

In a news briefing Tuesday, Passaic County Fire Chief Patrick Trentacost announced the death of the firefighter, Israel Tolentino.

“It is with deep sorrow that I announce the line of duty death of firefighter Israel Tolentino, a 33-year-old," Trentacost said. "He courageously fought an illness but succumbed to complications from COVID-19. He leaves behind his wife, Maria, and two children: a daughter, age 9, and a son, age 7."

In a press briefing Tuesday afternoon, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy honored the fallen firefighter and said he had spoken to Trentacost, Passaic mayor Hector Lora and Tolentino's wife.

“By all accounts an incredible guy, And somebody who we mourn with his family friends," Murphy said.

Lora said Tolentino joined the fire department in December 2018, fulfilling his dream of being a firefighter and helping others. On his days off, Tolentino also worked as an EMT, Lora said.

"Israel was a great father, person, husband, son," the mayor said. "We ask for all your thoughts and prayers for him and his family at this time."
