Driver Fatally Injures Man Waiting For Bus In Paterson, Police Say

Officials said the driver swerved to avoid another vehicle, then jumped the curb while trying to avoid oncoming traffic.

PATERSON, NJ — A driver jumped the curb and fatally injured a man waiting for the bus in Paterson on Friday morning, according to officials.

The crash happened on Main Street just after 10:30 a.m., officials said.

Paterson Police said the SUV driver was northbound on Main, approaching Madison Avenue, and swerved to get around a turning vehicle. Then, the driver swerved again to avoid approaching traffic and hit the pedestrian on the sidewalk.

The 60-year-old victim died at the scene, according to police. He has not been identified as of 3:30 p.m. Friday.

According to the Paterson Press, the SUV also hit a metal garbage can that was on the sidewalk, and the trash can struck a nearby gas station attendant.

Officials have also not identified the driver at this time, and did not say if any charges had been filed. First responders took the driver to St. Joseph's University Medical Center for treatment.
