Drone Sightings Reported In Wayne: What Police Are Doing

The unidentified aerial vehicles have been spotted flying over different parts of the state since mid-November.

WAYNE, NJ — Police confirmed that there have been reported drone sightings in Wayne, saying that officials' main concern is if the aerial vehicles are "unusually large" or operating suspiciously near critical infrastructure.

Residents in Morris County began reporting unusual drone activity in mid-November, and sightings were noted near the Picatinny Arsenal military research facility. Since then, the apparent influx of aerial vehicles has been reported in more than half of New Jersey's counties, with residents and elected officials both expressing frustration on the lack of an explanation.

Detective Captain Dan Daly told Patch that Wayne Police have been notified of "several" reported sightings in recent weeks, and that investigators forward information about any possibly concerning instances to county, state, and federal authorities.

"The sighting of an individual, hobby-sized drone, that is not engaged in any discernible nefarious way, is not forwarded," he said. "The main concern lies with unusually large drones, or several acting in concert with each other or any drones operating around critical infrastructure or in an articulable, suspicious manner."

Daly did not specify further, only saying that sightings that fit the criteria were forwarded.
