Mayor Hector Lora thanked witnesses who reported the incident to police for preventing a "tragedy" in the area.

PASSAIC, NJ - A man was shot by police near a NJ Transit station Wednesday night after he reportedly fired a gun in the area, officials said.

The shooting took place near Passaic Avenue and Lackawanna Place after several witnesses called police at around 6:30 p.m. reporting that a man was firing a gun, according to city Mayor Hector Lora.

“[Police] were able to confirm that the weapon that the individual had, the handgun, was discharged,” Lora said in a Facebook live video Wednesday night. “There was a police-involved shooting. The suspect was struck, and that individual was taken into custody and taken to the hospital.”

In his remarks, Lora noted that the quick police response and the residents who spoke up were “tremendously” helpful and “extremely vital” in ensuring that the incident was placed under control.

“The resident that took immediate action and called, along with the many phone calls that police received, I wanted to take this moment to say thank you,” Lora said.

“The action taken by residents who witnessed the scene unfolding … I believe, prevented further injury or a tragedy in the area,” Lora added.
