Mystery Drone Reports Reach Passaic County, Officials Say

Local police are encouraging residents to report sightings to the FBI, as the investigation continues into increased drone activity in NJ.

PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — Residents of Passaic County also have been spotting the nighttime drone flights that have become a topic of conversation in many New Jersey communities, officials said.

The unidentified aerial vehicles have been spotted flying over different parts of New Jersey since mid-November, prompting concern from some officials who say the drones have been hovering near critical infrastructure.

On Thursday, officials in Pompton Lakes said they were aware of reported drone activity in the borough and in neighboring towns. Police are collaborating with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Sheriff’s Office, and Office of Emergency Management, along with state and federal agencies.

"We understand the public’s concerns and are actively addressing the situation to ensure the safety of our community," borough officials said.

There have also been sightings in Wanaque, West Milford, and Clifton, according to a northjersey.com article.

Gov. Phil Murphy met with state and federal authorities on Wednesday to discuss the flurry of reported activity in the skies over the Garden State; officials continue to say there is no known threat to the public.

What the drones are doing, and who they belong to, have been the subject of much online conjecture — but authorities have offered little in the way of explanation at this point in the probe.

The FBI Newark and the NJ State Police are asking the public to report any information related to the recent sightings of possible drones, as are local police. Anyone with relevant information is asked to call the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit it online at tips.fbi.gov. Citizens can also upload videos through the website.
