New Wayne Police Chief Vows To Uphold High Standards

WAYNE, NJ — Joseph Rooney was officially sworn in as Wayne Township's new police chief last week, and had high praise for the officers under his command as he noted how often the profession is scrutinized.

The 17-year veteran of the Wayne Township Police Department was promoted to Deputy Chief last summer, while former Chief of Police Jack McNiff prepared to retire.

He and seven other officers were promoted at a ceremony Feb. 12 at the Wayne Community Center, attended by local officials, Lieutenant Governor Tahesha Way, and Wayne's state legislative representatives.

Mayor Chris Vergano described him as "laser-focused," and a humble leader.

After thanking the former chiefs and his family, Rooney said there is "no other profession" like law enforcement for both the criticism and praise it draws.

Rooney said the 125 men and women of the Wayne Township Police Department were "the finest" in the state, and spoke of how often they face "daunting" circumstances — from having to perform CPR on a child, to chasing car theft suspects, to negotiating with an armed resident in crisis.

"While we are certainly subject to the criticism of the public and held to the highest standards by those who we serve, know that the standard that the public holds for us does not even come close to the standard that we hold for ourselves," he said.

“I promise to hold our agency to the highest standards of performance, because that’s my job and my job alone,” Rooney continued. “If we fall short, the only imperfect officer wearing this patch is me.”
