NJ Man Cleaning Snow Off Car Killed In Hit-And-Run: Officials

The man and his wife lived across the street from where he was struck, officials said. A 21-year-old driver has been charged.

PATERSON, NJ — Officials have arrested the driver accused of fatally injuring a Paterson man while he was clearing snow off of his car on Monday morning.

According to police, the driver of a green Chevy Trailblazer did not stop after hitting 59-year-old Abel Herrera, just before 9 a.m. Police officers found him lying in the road between Alabama Avenue and Trenton Avenue with "significant injuries,' officials said.

Herrera and his wife lived across the street, and she was inside the car when he was hit, according to an ABC7 report.

First responders took Herrera to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police and the Passaic County Sheriff's Office identified Shakim Adams, 21, of Paterson as the driver responsible and later arrested him, officials said. He was charged with second-degree leaving the scene of an accident.

About an inch of snow fell in Paterson from Sunday overnight into Monday, according to National Weather Service data.
