NJ Man Shot By Police After Standoff, Prosecutor Says
A Passaic man was shot by police during a standoff in which he reportedly pointed a gun at an officer, authorities said.

PASSAIC, NJ - A Passaic man was shot by a Passaic Police Department officer during a standoff on the evening of May 10, authorities said.
Shortly before 6:30 p.m., the Passaic Police Department received a 911 report of a man with a gun in the area of Lackawanna Place and Passaic Avenue in the city, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes said in a statement.
At the scene, officers found Jason Urban, 42, of Passaic, who was wielding a handgun and fired several rounds into the air, Valdes said.

Officers reportedly commanded Urban to drop the gun, all of which he disregarded, Valdes said.
After firing the rounds in the air, Urban pointed the gun in the direction of an officer, at which point a second officer fired eight shots and struck Urban, Valdes said. It was not immediately clear how many rounds struck Urban.

Urban was taken into custody and transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center for treatment, Valdes said.
The firearm he was wielding was later revealed to be a Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum stolen out of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, Valdes said.
Urban has been charged via warrant-complaint with one count of second degree unlawful possession of a firearm, one count of third degree receiving stolen property, one count of fourth degree aggravated assault and related weapons offenses, Valdes said.
The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has since filed a motion for Urban to be detained before pretrial. His first appearance and a hearing on the pretrial detention motion has been scheduled before Judge Irme Karaszegi on May 19.
