"I enjoy math and physics because of their relationship to the natural world and because numbers are so candid yet so complex," Bernhardt said.

Bernhardt is also a student of classical music. A member of the school's bands, Bernhardt was named to the North Jersey Area Band and the New Jersey Region Band. He credits band director Gabriel Batiz with having "an incredible impact" on his life.

"As part of all the bands at school, I have spent much time learning from him," Bernhardt said. "He has been one of the greatest contributing factors in developing my musical artistry, character, and leadership skills."

Bernhardt is also a successful bowler. He was named to the All-Big North Team for the Independence Division, NorthJersey.com reported.

Bernhardt never sought out to become valedictorian.

"My motivation to maintain high grades as well as setting a high standard for myself led me to this accomplishment," Bernhardt said.

Bernhardt will attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York where he will study computer science and mathematics. He is not exactly sure what he wants to do post college.

"My initial studies in college will help me determine which fields I am most interested in," Bernhardt said. "I hope to find a career that I can enjoy while continuing music as a hobby."

Bernhardt credits his parents with allowing him the chance to achieve the things he has.

"My parents have always supported me in each of my endeavors. They have widened my worldview by traveling with me and alleviated my stresses by putting focus on my health and happiness," Bernhardt said. "They are the reason why I can spend my time doing things I love."
