Passaic Co. Man Sentenced In Brutal Robbery That Broke Victim’s Ribs

The charges stem from a Nov. 15, 2020 incident at around 6 p.m. in which the man assaulted a victim outside a church in the city.

PATERSON, NJ - A Paterson man was sentenced this week in a violent robbery that left the victim with broken ribs, a broken collarbone and more, authorities said.

Walter A. Williams, 30, of Paterson, was sentenced on Wednesday to six years New Jersey State Prison after he was found guilty by a grand jury in February of second-degree aggravated assault and third-degree theft, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes said in a statement.

Williams must serve 85% of his sentence before he’s eligible for parole, Valdes added.

The charges stem from a Nov. 15, 2020 incident at around 6 p.m. in which Williams assaulted Luis Rey, 62, of Paterson, near 442 Broadway in the city, Valdes said.

According to statements made in court, Williams grabbed Rey and slammed him onto the concrete sidewalk, causing a broken collarbone, several broken ribs and a head laceration to Rey.

Items in Rey’s possession prior to the assault were also taken by Williams, Valdes said.
