PATERSON, NJ - A Passaic County tobacco shop owner was charged on May 6 in connection with a killing that occurred earlier that day in the area of East Main Street and Hillman Street in Paterson, authorities said.

Calvin King, 47, of Paterson, was charged with second and third degree weapons offenses, including unlawful possession of a shotgun, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-In-Charge Isa Abbassi said in a joint statement.

The charges stem from the early morning shooting at around 1:14 a.m., in which patrol officers found a gunshot victim, Kyheem Clark, 34-years-old from Paterson, with a gunshot wound to the chest, Valdes and Abbassi said. He was transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

An investigation subsequently determined that an altercation took place between Clark and King at King's shop when the owner shot the victim, Valdes and Abbassi said.

The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has since filed a motion for King's pre-trial detention at Bergen County Jail, the statement said.
