See Proposed Fees At New Recreation Center, When Wayne Takes Over YMCA
The proposed standard membership fees are lower than those currently listed at the Wayne YMCA. Take a look at what you might pay:
WAYNE, NJ — Residents are getting a first look at potential prices for memberships and classes at Wayne Township’s first recreation center, with the township set to take over the YMCA property on Pike Drive this fall.
The fee structure includes rates for residents and non-residents, and offers two membership tiers – with the proposed cost of standard memberships coming in lower than those that the Y currently offers.
The estimated date that the township will take over the building is Nov. 1. The new community hub, referred to as the Wayne Recreation Center in township documents, will be managed by the township’s Department of Parks and Recreation. In late August, the Township Council approved a bond measure that will fund the $12.2 million purchase.

At the council meeting on Sept. 4, officials introduced an ordinance outlining membership and daily pass fees, as well as costs for personal training, exercise and instructional classes, swimming lessons, and facility rentals.
Both monthly and annual memberships are available, and people who live outside the township may become members or buy daily passes at a higher cost than Wayne residents.

There will also be two membership levels, a Standard tier and a Premium tier. Both offer access to the fitness center, swimming pool and gymnasium (during public hours), squash courts, and locker rooms, and discounted rates on participating youth programs, adult programs, and camps.
A Premium Membership also includes access to most adult exercise classes and some youth exercise classes, at no additional cost – and free access to “certain programs and events at the Recreation Center.”
There are also discounted rates for seniors aged 62 and up, and a deeper discount for seniors 65 and up who have Medicare.
As mentioned above, the proposed standard membership fees for both residents and non-residents are lower than the cost of standard memberships currently listed by the Wayne YMCA.
For example, family memberships at the Y run $120 per month, and under the township’s fee structure a standard family membership would cost $79 per month for Wayne residents and $109 for non-residents. And, Wayne YMCA adult memberships cost $71 monthly, while the proposed fee at the Wayne Recreation Center (for those aged 15-61) is $39 a month for residents and $59 a month for non-residents. Rates are slightly lower if you pay annually, as well.
As far as facility rentals go, there are different price ranges for Wayne Public Schools, nonprofits and religious groups, individual residents and non-residents, and for-profit institutions. These groups can rent the pool, gymnasium, theater, exercise rooms, or classrooms.
The fees have not been finalized, and will appear before the Township Council at their next meeting.
