St. Joseph's, William Paterson University Sponsor Children Health Issues Workshops for Educational Professionals

Teachers, school nurses, guidance counselors and other educational professionals are invited to attend the many workshops held until May.

St. Joseph’s Heathcare System and William Paterson University’s Center for Continuing and Professional Education are sponsoring children’s health issues workshops called “It’s All About The Kids,” designed for teachers, school nurses, guidance counselors and other educational professionals.

The workshops, which will be presented by St. Joseph’s Healthcare System professionals and/or education experts, will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at William Paterson University, located at 1600 Valley Road in Wayne.

Tuesday, March 10 Managing Medical Emergencies in School (Workshop #E328)

  • Since school medical emergencies can involve students, adults, staff or family members, David Feingold, MD, Chief, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital (SJCH), will discuss the increase in school medical emergencies, describe the leading emergencies that occur and provide guidelines for management until EMS arrive. He will also stress the importance of preparing for medical emergencies before they occur and outline the responsibilities of all school personnel, among other things.

Tuesday, March 24 – Reducing Risk for Sports Injuries (Workshop #329)

  • More than 1.35 million children were treated for sports-related injury in hospital emergency departments across the country - not including youngsters who are treated by their pediatrician, in urgent care or sports medicine centers. Susan Ginart, RN, MS, APN-C, Department of Pediatric Neurology, SJCH, and Steven Vivino, PT, DPT, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center (SJRMC), will discuss the most common sports injuries in children and adolescents, discuss the features of a safe sports program and describe steps to reduce the risk of injuries in school sports.

Tuesday, April 14 – EQ vs IQ II (Workshop #304)

  • Requested by educators who attended the Fall 2014 seminar “Promoting Emotional Intelligence to Children,” this session will include a brief summary of the definition and components of emotional intelligence. Fern Weis, CEC, Parent Coach and Educator, Your Family Matters, will engage participants in a series of interactive activities designed to build awareness of the concept of building character vs. the pursuit of achievement in fostering the development of emotional intelligence in children. Participants will also experience the principles of active listening and develop a new appreciation for problem-solving strategies.

Tuesday, April 21 – Ask the Doctors! (Workshop #276)

  • It’s your turn! Bring your questions and concerns related to youngsters’ healthy development and well-being to our panel of pediatricians. Dennis Kuo, MD, Director, Pediatric Residency Program, SJCH, along with physicians in training at the Children’s Hospital, will address your concerns. They will also share their experiences and suggest strategies for welcoming and engaging children and families from other countries and cultures who have recently moved to New Jersey.

Tuesday, May 5 – Holistic Approaches to Good Health: A New Perspective on Well-Being (Workshop #330)

  • Holistic health incorporates the whole person - body, mind, spirit and emotion. Diane McClure, DNP, CPNP, CCRN, AHN-BC, CCAP, Neonatal Advanced Practice Nurse and Caritas Coach, SJRMC, will define holistic health and summarize its history and origins. She will discuss the importance of self-reflection and self-care in fostering optimal health and well-being. Dr. McClure will also guide participants in conducting a self-assessment using six areas of human potential and in developing their own self-care plan. Participants in this seminar will qualify to win a Holistic Health Basket.

There is a $20 registration fee for each individual workshop, but if you register for all 5 workshops in the Children’s Health Issues Series, the fee is $90.
