'In Their Shoes' Youth Suicide Awareness Event Is Saturday In Wayne

Hundreds of shoes will be displayed to represent NJ youth who have ended their lives; resources and therapy dogs will also be on-site.

WAYNE, NJ — September is National Suicide Prevention Month. This weekend, the Wayne community will remember young people who have died by suicide, while sharing empathy with those struggling with their mental health.

The Wayne Alliance, Wayne Township, and Stigma-Free Task Force are hosting an "In Their Shoes" event on Saturday, where more than 300 pairs of shoes will be on display to represent the New Jersey youth who ended their own lives.

This gathering will increase awareness of the impact of suicide, provide information and resources to community members, and offer comfort to anyone who may need it, according to organizers. It will take place at Wayne Town Hall (475 Valley Road) on Sept. 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and therapy dogs will also be on-site.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death for New Jersey youth between 10 and 24 years of age, according to the state Department of Children and Families.

The In Their Shoes exhibit was launched in 2013 by New Jersey-based Attitudes In Reverse. The displayed shoes carry messages of support to remind young people that they are not alone, and to encourage those who may not understand what it's like living with mental illness to foster understanding and kindness.
