Senior Emma Marosits was just a handful of students to be recognized.

WAYNE, NJ — A township high school student received a national award for a painting she made.

"Because it means people actually like my art and because of the reward the school receives," Marosits said.

Marosits' painting is an acrylic painting of a striped cat peering out of a window.

Gabriela Peller is Marosits' art teacher.

"It's amazing when students get recognized by people other than myself for their achievements. I was thrilled that Emma's piece won Artist of the Week on Artsonia because it was actually her first real acrylic painting, and she worked so hard on it to get amazing results," Porter said. "She was completely deserving of the win, and it made me so happy as a teacher to see her smile when she received her award."

Artsonia developed its Artist of the Week award in 2009 as a way of recognizing students for their artistic achievements. Artsonia selects 12 random submissions in various age groups. The public then votes online for several days to choose a winner.

Wayne Hills will receive a $100 gift certificate and Marosits will get a $50 certificate from Blick Art Materials for her win.
