Man Shot After Trying To Steal Cash From Bank Guard: Authorities

The incident occurred Wednesday at Bank of America on Hamburg Turnpike in Wayne.

WAYNE, NJ - A 33-year-old Plainfield man was shot after he tried to steal a bag of cash from an armed security guard outside of a Wayne bank Wednesday afternoon, according to authorities.

Around 12 p.m., police were called to the Bank of America on Hamburg Turnpike in response to a shooting, the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office said.

Upon arrival, officers found the Plainfield man with an apparent gunshot wound to the torso, along with two private armed security guards and their armored vehicle, the prosecutor's office said.

Further investigation revealed the man approached one of the guards as he was leaving the bank and heading back to the armored truck, and tried to steal the cash bags he was carrying, according to the prosecutor's office.

A struggle ensued, during which the guard fired one round striking the suspect, the prosecutor's office said.

The man was taken to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Paterson and is in stable condition, authorities said. Neither of the guards were injured during the incident, according to the prosecutor's office.

At this time, no criminal complaints have been filed, however this investigation is active and ongoing, authorities said.
