Wayne Hills Graduate, 18, Killed In Tragic Boating Accident: Officials
NJ State Police said the teen was being pulled on a raft behind a boat, and the propeller struck her as she was trying to get back on board.

WAYNE, NJ — A recent Wayne Hills High School graduate sustained fatal injuries after being accidentally struck by a boat propeller during an outing at the Jersey Shore on Sunday, officials said.
Zeina Mahafzah, 18, was dismembered in what authorities called a "tragic boating accident" in the waters off Long Beach Island, according to local police and a 911 call to first responders.

The incident happened at around 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 25, off the coast of Sunset Park in Harvey Cedars. New Jersey State Police said Mahafzah was on a raft being pulled behind the boat, and the propeller struck her as she was trying to get back on the vessel.
Mahafzah was a 2024 graduate of Wayne Hills and planned to attend Rutgers University in the fall, as stated in a college decision video from the school.

State troopers and Harvey Cedars Police said that the incident is still under investigation, and no further information has been released at this time.
"As the investigation is in its preliminary stages, we ask that you keep the family and community in your thoughts and prayers," police in Harvey Cedars said.
Wayne Schools officials did not provide any statement, saying they have been in contact with Mahafzah's family and are respecting their wishes at this time.
Rutgers University-Newark confirmed Mahafzah was registered for fall classes in the School of Arts and Sciences, and a spokesperson said the university is sending their support to her family "during this incredibly difficult time."
