Woman Dies, Man Critical After NYE Fire At Passaic Apartment Building: Reports

The woman had been rescued from her apartment but died of her injuries, the reports said. The Red Cross has set up a temporary shelter.

PASSAIC, NJ — A woman died Tuesday night after she was rescued from a fire in an apartment building on Madison Street in Passaic, according to reports.

The woman was 50 years old, News 12 New Jersey reported. She has not been identified.

Firefighters pulled the woman out of a window of a first-floor apartment and died at St. Mary's General Hospital, North Jersey.com reported. A 66-year-old man who lived with the woman was listed in critical condition at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, that report said.

The building, which has 25 apartments and 59 residents, has been shut down while water service is restored and the fire alarms are reset, News 12 reported.

The Red Cross New Jersey has opened a temporary shelter for those displaced by the fire at the Muhammad Ali School 23 at 63 Dayton Ave. in Passaic. All those affected are welcome, the Red Cross said.

The fire started about 9:30 p.m. on the first floor of the three-story building, North Jersey.com reported, and was brought under control by 10:40 p.m. The cause remains under investigation.
