Lt. Colonel William Vankat, who died April 26, 2025, led troops in Vietnam and later advocated for veterans and officiated sports.

Mantua, NJ — New Jersey has a storied tradition of military service, with countless individuals dedicating their lives to protecting our nation. While words can't fully capture the immense gratitude we feel for our servicemen and women, Patch has partnered with T-Mobile to highlight a few remarkable veterans and active-duty military members from our state.

A career marine who led troops as a young Lt. in Vietnam
Tell us about the military hero and what your community should know about them.
He died at hid daughter's house in Texas on April 26, 2025. He is buried in the veteran's cemetery in Cloister County. After his service, he continued to advocate for veteran's affairs. He also officiated college softball and H.S. football, later becoming an evaluator of officials.
