No Threat To West Deptford Schools Over Tik Tok Challenge: Police

No threats have been made toward schools in West Deptford in relation to the nationwide "challenge" on the social media app Tik Tok.

WEST DEPTFORD, NJ — No threats have been made toward schools in West Deptford in relation to the nationwide "challenge" on the social media app Tik Tok warning of the potential for school violence on Friday, according to police.

“While we know this social media activity is out there, we also know that the vast majority of our students do the right thing every day,” West Deptford Superintendent of Schools Greg Cappello said in a letter to the community. “We want to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the power that social media has to influence others.”

Cappello referred to the "Shoot Up Your School Challenge," which was addressed by the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness on Thursday.

"At this time, there appears to have been a generic threat shared on social media that has impacted various school districts," Homeland Security said in a statement. "We believe these posts to be non-credible threats at this time, however, all threats are being reviewed, assessed, and shared with appropriate law enforcement entities throughout the State."

Anyone who has any information about potential threats can make a report any time of the day to NJOHSP's CTWatch at 866-4SAFENJ (866-472-3365) or tips@njohsp.gov.

Cappello said the district has been in touch with the West Deptford Police Department, which said there is no threat to West Deptford schools. He also encouraged anyone who might have any information about possible threats to report it.

“Our community has a strong tradition of keeping our students safe,” Cappello said. “We want to ensure that you are aware of this social media trend to have a heightened sense of awareness. It may also be beneficial to take the time to speak with children and students on the topic of social media and digital citizenship.”

Parents who have questions are encouraged to contact their school’s principal.
