UNION COUNTY, NJ — A code orange air quality alert has been issued for Union County on Wednesday by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
A code orange air quality alert means that the Ground Level Ozone or air pollution concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups.
"Sensitive groups include children, people suffering from asthma, heart disease or other lung diseases, and the elderly," according to the National Weather Service(NWS).

The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding strenuous activity during the afternoon and early evening hours or exercise outdoors.
Locals can expect a sunny day on Wednesday with a high near 88 degrees. There will also be a calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph in the afternoon.

"Sunny skies, hot temperatures, and light winds out of the southwest will create a favorable environment for ozone levels to rise into the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) category," according to the NWS.
Here is a look at the weather ahead this week:
Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 64. Southwest wind 3 to 6 mph.
Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 89. Southwest wind 3 to 7 mph.
Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 68. West wind 3 to 6 mph.
Friday: A 40 percent chance of showers, mainly after 2 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 86. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon.
Friday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 65.
