Flooding, Scorching Heat Expected In Union County Tuesday

A heat advisory and a flood watch have been issued for Union County on Tuesday.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — A heat advisory and a flood watch have been issued for Union County on Tuesday.

The heat advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday as heat index values up to 100 are expected, according to the National Weather Service(NWS).

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses. The NWS offers the following tips:

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Stay in an air-conditioned room
  • Stay out of the sun
  • Check up on relatives and neighbors
  • Take extra precautions when outside
  • Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing
  • Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening
  • Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke

Additionally, a Flood Watch is in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night.

"A slow-moving frontal boundary will interact with a tropical air mass to bring showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Locally heavy rainfall is possible and rainfall rates may be near or exceed 2 inches per hour at times. This rainfall could lead to flash flooding," according to the NWS.

Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.

Here is a look at the upcoming forecast:

Tuesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms between 2 and 5 p.m., then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Increasing clouds, with a high near 94. Heat index values as high as 103. West wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tuesday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 11 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m., then a chance of showers after 2 a.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 73. Southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 89. Heat index values as high as 95. Calm wind becoming west around 6 mph in the afternoon.

Wednesday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 73. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.

Thursday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2 p.m., then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 2 and 5 p.m., then showers and thunderstorms likely after 5 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 87. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 8 p.m., then a chance of showers between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m.. Cloudy, with a low around 71. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Friday: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 87.
