Severe Thunderstorm Warning For Union County: NWS

Severe thunderstorms, flash flooding and strong winds are predicted for Union County Monday afternoon, according to the NWS.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Union County until 8 p.m. on Monday.

Flash flooding and heavy rainfall is predicted Monday afternoon — mainly after 3 p.m. in Union County. According to the NWS, some of the storms could produce gusty winds.

The expected rainfall rate is one to two inches in one hour.

The NWS advises people to turn around if they encounter a flooded road. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles, the NWS warned.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall can cause flooding of urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots. Residents are advised to report flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement and request they pass this information to the National Weather Service.

At 12:25 p.m., the NWS said a severe thunderstorm was located over East Hanover, near Caldwell, moving east at 35 mph. Damage to trees and power lines is also possible, the NWS said.
