WESTFIELD, NJ — Triangle Park along Mountain Avenue will be officially renamed to honor Westfield's connection to the quest for American independence centuries ago.

Town Council unanimously approved a resolution on Tuesday night that bestowed the name "Washington-Rochambeau Trail Park" on the land.

The park sits along what was already recognized as the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route National Historic Trail. The path commemorates the unified march between American and French soldiers in 1781 on the way to Yorktown, Virginia where victory assured American independence.

General George Washington was joined by General Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, Comte de Rochambeau while leading their armies in one line to complete the "longest march and most complex military maneuver of the American Revolutionary War," the resolution said.

"Today's proclamation isn't just a recognition of the Trail," Peter Wong, current Chief of Education at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island said on Tuesday night. "It's a recognition of Westfield's place in the story of American independence."
