Cops: Carjackers Caught After Chase, One Escapes

Local and state police pursued three people through West Orange early Saturday morning believed to be involved in a Newark carjacking.

Three people involved in a Newark carjacking led local and state police on a chase through West Orange early Saturday morning, according to authorities. 

Police pursued a Chevrolet Traverse with South Carolina plates westbound on Interstate 280 at about 6:30 a.m. as it fled Newark, West Orange Police Sgt. Robert Hartman said.

The three people in the Traverse jumped out of the car between Exits 7 and 8 in West Orange and fled on foot, according to Hartman. Two, a man and woman, were arrested in the foot pursuit.

The third man eluded police and is believed to have escaped into West Orange, according to Hartman.

The man was described as having dreadlocks and wearing a red hat and white shirt, Hartman said.

Police have not released the identities of the man and woman who were arrested.

West Orange police assisted Newark cops and State Police in the chase.
