The father was not injured, but the infant's mother was "seriously" injured by the pit bull, said a spokeswoman for Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone.
The parents were taken to an unnamed hospital for treatment and released from the hospital that same day, Saturday, said Ciccone's spokeswoman. The names of the parents have not been released to protect their privacy, as they have not been charged with a crime. Prosecutor Ciccone called this "a tragic incident."

The prosecutor's spokeswoman said those are all the updates she can release as of Monday morning, as the death of the infant remains under investigation, and is a top priority for the prosecutor's team.
At 6:17 a.m. Saturday, police received a 911 distress call from a home on Mereline Avenue in Avenel for an unresponsive baby believed to have been attacked by the family dog, said Woodbridge Police Director Robert Hubner. The baby was a three-month-old boy.
Officers located the mother and baby, who sustained serious injuries from the dog. The baby was pronounced dead at the scene. The mother sustained the most serious injuries, but she and the baby's father were both taken to a hospital.
