Community Raises Thousands for Fire Victims

Lincoln kids' walk-a-thon nets $4,261.50 for Jubelt family

It turns out a simple walk can be worth thousands of dollars.

Lincoln Elementary School fourth- and fifth-graders have raised $4,261.50 for the Jubelt family, whose Vassar Street home was largely destroyed by fire in April. The kids received pledges and contributed their own money to a walk-a-thon at the school earlier this month that fulfilled their community service obligations.

The excited students were able to meet the Jubelts Thursday, as the family of four stopped by the school for a check presentation. With fire Chief David Murphy and police Patrolman Brian Zivkovich on hand, the Jubelts expressed their gratitude for the kids' overwhelming support as their twin toddlers scampered into the willing arms of Lincoln students.

"We couldn't believe children we didn't even know thought and cared so much for us," said Ellen Jubelt.

The Jubelt home has since been razed since a April 8 fire tore through the Vassar Street home's attic and second floor, fed by a gas line on their deck. The parents of twin toddlers were not injured in the blaze, although many material possessions were lost, and the fire left the remains of the home uninhabitable.

The Jubelts' unfortunate situation has inspired an outpouring of support, with many raising money in their time of need. Efforts have ranged from organized events such as the walk-a-thon as well as a collection at Town Hall and individual drives initiated by high school students.

Ramapo High School students also recently did their part collectively with a charity volleyball tournament whose proceeds went to the Jubelts as well as others impacted by house fires.

Ramapo student Kirsten Salmins said the tournament, sponsored by the school's SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) club, raised $537. Students who played on teams of six or more paid $5 while spectators were asked for $2. A concurrent bake sale also helped boost the collection.

"We figured that a charity volleyball game would be a great way to get the school involved for a worthy cause," said Salmins, who helped coordinate the tournament with fellow student Amy Christensen.

"We had over 15 teams playing, with a majority of them signing up at the last minute, so there was a larger outcome than expected. ... Overall, the game was a huge success," Salmins said.

Ramapo students and parents also presented their check to the Jubelts, with a reception Monday at Fire Company 2 on Wyckoff Avenue.

"It means the world to us. We're so thankful," Ellen Jubelt said.
