A discarded cigarette sparked the fire, authorities said.

A carelessly discarded cigarette sparked the fire that killed an elderly woman in Montvale Sunday, authorities announced.

Authorities found the woman, Ninette Grannis, 77, whom authorities said was inside the North Avenue home when the heavy fire consumed it, said acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo.

While authorities were investigating the fire they found Grannis' remains inside the house, Calo said. The Bergen County Medical Examiner's Office identified the remains during a postmortem examination.
