Madigan Appointed to Fill Vacant Township Committee Seat

Longtime volunteer to serve out Dave Connolly's unexpired term through 2011

Thomas Madigan will soon join Mayor Rudy Boonstra and Committeemen Kevin Rooney, Brian Scanlan and Chris DePhillips aboard the governing body.

The Township Committee unanimously voted 3-0 Tuesday night to appoint Madigan to the seat vacated by former Committeeman Dave Connolly. Member Brian Scanlan was absent, traveling on business.

Madigan, a current member of the township recreation commission, will be sworn in next week at the governing body's work session. He will serve the remainder of Connolly's term, which runs through 2011.

Boonstra, Rooney and DePhillips offered their congratulations to Madigan, a 27-year resident with a long history of volunteerism.

Madigan, who has coached many sports within the township's Recreation Department in addition to his duties as a commission member, currently is a member of the Wyckoff-Midland Park Rotary Club and the Ramapo Music Parents Association and the Association of Parents, Teachers and Students at Ramapo. Earlier this year, he served as a representative of the rec commission on the Master Plan Committee.

He served 12 years on the Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education and has been active in supporting the Wyckoff Education Foundation. Madigan is a director of the Elizabeth "Bitsy" Madigan Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to RIH students, is a member of the John Paul II Foundation, and has participated as a host for the Rotary's Gift of Life program.

"This is the type of person we're pleased to welcome on the governing body," Boonstra said.

Members were not available for additional comment after adjourning their regular meeting and going into private session.

Madigan was chosen from a field of three vetted by the Republican county committee that included Erik Ruebenacker and Christine Becker.
