New Restaurant Byrd Opens Near Hoboken/Jersey City Light Rail Stop, Adds Brunch

Byrd opened near a Hoboken light rail station this summer and just added a brunch menu after customers requested it.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Ehren Ryan — the Australian-born chef and owner of new restaurant Byrd in Hoboken — said he never intended to serve brunch at the eatery when it opened in June.

But customers started asking, so they added the option on Sundays beginning this month.

Their spacious spot is located alongside Hoboken's 9th Street light rail station, just down the hill from Jersey City Heights. It's an easy train ride from Hudson County's waterfront towns as well.

Ryan, who owns the spot with wife Nadine, also runs the popular restaurant Common Lot in Millburn. He doesn't offer brunch at the latter and doesn't have a liquor license in Millburn like he does at the Hoboken spot, so he was especially glad to offer a range of cocktails for the new brunch.

For most of the week, diners at Byrd can enjoy entrees like roasted duck breast, pork schnitzel, and tagliatelle with autumn black truffle, as well as smaller plates like grilled octopus and miso grilled eggplant. Ryan said the most popular orders include the double cheeseburger, which comes on a gluten free bun, and the schnitzel.

Brunch, Cocktails, And Kids' Menu

The new Sunday brunch menu has some unique dishes: Cilbir eggs (Turkish eggs, pictured above), smoked salmon and potato cakes, avocado toast with egg, chicken and waffles, prime skirt steak with two fried eggs, and gluten free pancakes.

Ryan said the menu is a mix of Australian favorites, some comfort food, and some items he knows are especially popular with Americans.

There's also a kids' menu and cocktail menu. The latter includes beverages such as mimosas for two, bloody Mary, and a Morning Marg with fresh orange juice, lime, and agave.

The kids' menu, both during the week and for brunch, has more than just the usual burgers and fries. Byrd offers grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, and cauliflower; battered fish and chips, and more.

Especially unique for brunch, besides the entrees and cocktails, are the sides such as "Yum Yum Fries" (also pictured above), which have sesame seeds and a special sweet sauce.

Byrd offers ample window seating on three sides and will offer outdoor dining in spring.
