Wyckoff Moves To Protect Local Historical Landmarks, Buildings

WYCKOFF, NJ — The Township Committee Tuesday is slated to create a historic preservation commission that will help designate, protect, and safeguard the township's heritage.

The commission will advise the committee, Planning Board, and Zoning Board of Adjustment regarding historic landmarks in town.

The commission will work to safeguard Wyckoff's heritage and its cultural history. The group will consider local properties for historic designation and protection. The locations could be the site of a historic event or represent work done by a particular individual.

Mayor Thomas Madigan said officials want to educate owners and developers of the value of historic landmarks in Wyckoff. They also want to propose alternatives to any proposed development in town to try to preserve the town's historic elements.

The committee is scheduled to approve a measure Tuesday creating the commission.

Wyckoff has 15 sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Reformed Dutch Church of Wyckoff on Wyckoff Avenue and the Terhune House and Van Gelder House, both on Godwin Avenue.
