WYCKOFF, NJ — A Ramapo High School student received a $1,000 scholarship from the New Jersey State League of Municipalities this week.

Alex Sullivan won the scholarship as part of a statewide contest for high school juniors and seniors through the Louis Bay 2nd Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship Competition. He was just three people statewide to receive a scholarship.

The theme this year for the competition was to write an essay on "What My Municipal Government Does Best." Sullivan's essay was about a new recycling program in Wyckoff.

Sullivan's essay was about the need for Wyckoff leaders to get the word out about a new, dual-stream recycling initiative started in town in July 2018.

Sullivan created two videos with then-Mayor Brian Scanlan explaining the need for the switch and why it was necessary.

"The Wyckoff government did an excellent job in spreading the word and making the transition smooth and straightforward for the town's population," Sullivan said in his essay. "Wyckoff's dedication to environmental friendliness and their ability to spread the message effectively, it should be no surprise that Wyckoff is one of the cleanest and greenest towns in New Jersey."
