CT Gov. Floats Changing L.I. Sound to ‘Connecticut Sound’ In X Joke
A petition is circulating on Change.org to rename Long Island Sound to the "Gulf of Connecticut."

NEW YORK — Following President Donald Trump’s decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont joked on social media this week that Long Island Sound should be renamed as “Connecticut Sound.”
Lamont on Thursday posted on X, “While the maps are changing, here’s an idea…”
His post includes a map with the name “Long Island Sound,” crossed off in red, and the name “Connecticut Sound,” written in red in its place. Lamont cc’d New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on his post. She hadn’t responded to Lamont’s post on X as of Friday morning.

Trump signed an executive order Jan. 20 to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.” Trump also proclaimed Feb. 9 as Gulf of America Day, and called for it to be observed with “programs, ceremonies, and activities.”
Vermont Gov. Phil Scott responded to Lamont’s joke with his own tongue-in-cheek suggestion on social media: He included a map with the Connecticut River’s name crossed out and renamed “Vermont River.”

Meanwhile, there is a petition on Change.org to rename Long Island Sound to the “Gulf of Connecticut,” also an apparent joke referencing the “Gulf of America” switch.
The petition states: “America has long ignored the greatness of CONNECTICUT! Such as being the pizza capital of the WORLD!!! and home to beautiful Bridgeport, a landmark vacation spot. Long Island isn't even that long, I've seen way bigger, and Connecticut is just such a beautiful state. Let me tell you folks, it's just a big beautiful state. We need to restore Connecticut Pride and Connecticut GREATNESS!!! We petition to change the body of water known as the "Long Island Sound" to a more American name, the Gulf of Connecticut.”
As of Friday morning, the petition had garnered nearly 700 signatures.
