Max, Bella, Luna Appear To Be Among Top Dog Names In NY

NEW YORK — Here’s a riddle: If you go to a local dog park in New York and shout “Max,” how many dogs might come running?

We can’t say exactly, but it could be a pack — a friendly, tail-wagging pack, but a large group nonetheless. That’s according to a recent analysis of customer data by The Wag, a pet care, health and training company.

The top four names nationally — Bella, Luna, Max and Charlie, respectively — appeared on the rankings of each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

If you don’t want your pooch to have the same name as all the other dogs, steer clear of these, which rose to the top 10 names for dogs in New York in 2023:

  2. Bella
  3. Luna
  4. Charlie
  5. Coco
  6. Rocky
  7. Milo
  8. Lola
  9. Bailey
  10. Lucy

The analysis is limited to The Wag’s customers, but similar to an analysis TrustedHousesitters, a pet-sitting business, that found the top names for dogs in 2023 are Charlie, Max, Cooper, Buddy and Jack for males, and Lucy, Bella, Luna, Daisy and Lilly for females.

According to that study, Lucy was the top name for dogs in New York. Additionally, pet name trends varied in New York City. In Manhattan, names are inspired by movie characters, that study found while pet names in Brooklyn are dominated by food and drinks. In Queens, pet names "reflect the most culturally and diverse borough," while in the Bronx and Staten Island, parents tend to give their pets traditionally human names.
