Astoria, Long Island City COVID Rates At All-Time Highs: Data

ASTORIA-LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — Weeks into the city's latest COVID-19 surge, virus rates are higher than ever in Astoria and Long Island City, where nearly a fifth of people tested positive last week, according to the latest city data.

This latest increase in cases began in mid-November and jumped up in December.

From Dec. 19-25, 2,569 people in the five ZIP codes that span Astoria and Long Island City tested positive for COVID-19. That is a positivity rate of about 18.7 percent across ZIP codes 11103, 11106, 11102, 11101, and 11109.

The rate of positive cases in Astoria and Long Island City is much higher than at any other point in record for the neighborhoods.

The highly contagious omicron variant is now the city's dominant strain, according to health officials, and the city as a whole reported 27,774 new positive tests on Tuesday — just behind the record set days earlier of 31,024 new cases.

Hospitalizations remain low over the past 28 days, and there were no deaths reported in these ZIP codes from Nov. 17-Dec. 14.
