Astoria Man, 88, Killed By Crash 5 Blocks From Home: NYPD

Miguel Hernandez died the day after a driver hit him as he was crossing a street near his home, police say.

ASTORIA, NY — An Astoria man died over the weekend after he was hit by a car a few blocks from his home, police said monday.

A man driving a 2016 Toyota sedan ran into Miguel Hernandez, 88, on Friday afternoon as he was crossing at the intersection of Broadway and Crescent Street, the NYPD said. The location is about five blocks from Hernandez's residence on 33rd Street near Broadway.

Cops responded to a 911 call around 3:15 p.m. and found Hernandez semi-conscious with head injuries, police said. He was taken to the Elmhurst Hospital Center, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day, the NYPD said.

The city medical examiner determined on Monday that Hernandez died because of the injuries he suffered from the crash, the NYPD said.

The driver, a 40-year-old man, remained on the scene of the collision but no one has been arrested, according to police. The NYPD says the crash is still under investigation.
