ASTORIA, QUEENS — City Harvest is setting up a mobile market Thursday in Astoria to distribute thousands of pounds of food to local families.

The nonprofit food rescue organization will be stationed outside the Astoria Houses Community Center from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Thursday to hand out fresh produce and nonperishable food items to residents of the public housing complex and the surrounding area.

During the course of the week, City Harvest will distribute 57,000 pounds of pre-packed food to more than 1,100 households in Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island, according to a news release.

The nonprofit regularly distributes food across the city at its mobile markets, but it is ramping up its operations in light of the coronavirus-related closure of New York City public schools, given that many children rely on free school breakfasts and lunches.
