Driver Hits, Critically Injures Elderly Woman On LIC Street

An 89-year-old woman was clinging to life after an SUV driver hit her as he pulled out of a parking lot on Saturday, police said.

LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — An SUV driver pulling out of a shopping center parking lot on Saturday hit an elderly woman who was crossing the street, gravely injuring her, according to police.

Just after 2:30 p.m. Saturday, the 89-year-old woman was crossing 48th Street just south of Northern Boulevard. A 37-year-old man driving a Dodge Durango was pulling out of a parking lot and turned left onto northbound 48th Street, where he hit the woman.

The driver had been leaving the parking lot that serves BJ's Wholesale Club and Burlington Coat Factory, according to LIC Post.

Police arrived and found the 89-year-old woman with severe head trauma. She was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital in critical condition; by Sunday morning, police believed she was likely to die from her injuries, according to an NYPD spokesperson.

The driver stayed at the scene and was later taken to Elmhurst Hospital with minor injuries, police said.
