G Train Service Extended Between LIC and Coney Island In August
The extra five miles of G train service will come amid other "significant" services changes during two weekends in August, the MTA said.

LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — New Yorkers will be able to take the G train from Long Island City to Coney Island in August despite a series of other service changes during that time, the MTA announced.
The G train, which runs between Queens and Brooklyn, usually ends at Church Avenue, but from August 6-9 and 13-16 it will run to Coney Island, replacing F service to the station. During that time, there will be "significant" service changes on the F, C, and E lines in order for the MTA to finish tunnel upgrades, the transit agency said.
“There are times when service changes can actually result in localized improvements for riders," said Acting Senior Vice President for Subways, Demetrius Crichlow, who "encouraged" riders from Long Island City to "put on some flip flops, grab the sun screen, and enjoy a transfer-free subway ride to the beach!”

These service changes come as the MTA tries to complete repairs on the Rutgers Tunnel, which carries the F train between Manhattan and Brooklyn.
The tunnel is one of 11 tubes that was "substantially damaged" by Superstorm Sandy, and nearly a decade later it is the final tunnel that the MTA needs to finish repairing, the agency said.

During the two weekends in August, the tunnel will be closed between the East Broadway station in Manhattan and the York Street station in Brooklyn, causing major changes for New Yorkers who are trying to travel between Manhattan and Brooklyn, or Manhattan and Queens.
Instead of running its regular route between the two boroughs, the F train will travel on the C line between Manhattan and Brooklyn from Canal Street to Euclid Avenue. The C train will not run past the World Trade Center stop during that time.
F and E train service will be basically swapped between Queens and Manhattan:
The F train will travel on the E line between Roosevelt Avenue and Canal Street. The E train will travel on the F line between Roosevelt Avenue and Delancey Street/Essex Street, where the train will stop.
Since the East Broadway station will be closed, the MTA will run shuttle busses between that station and the Delancey Street/Essex Street, where customers can get on the E.
During the two weekends in August these service changes will be in effect from 9:30 p.m. on Fridays until 5:00 a.m. on Monday. There will be additional overnight changes, too.
